Texas Tech Basketball Preview 2021
Our Texas Tech basketball preview 2021 - 22 finds that from 2016-17 to 2019-20, the Red Raiders made three NCAA appearances. In 2018, they got to the Elite Eight, and in 2019, the Red Raiders were the tourney runner-up. Last year, Texas Tech was eliminated in the second round. All of that happened under coach Chris Beard. Now Beard is the new head coach at rival Texas, and Mark Adams (0-0 Texas Tech/Overall/0 years) makes his head-coaching debut. However, Adams is not new to the team. He was a successful assistant for the Raiders under Beard and created an innovative defensive scheme. Last season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (18-11 Overall, 9-8 Big 12) finished sixth in the conference. In 2021 - 22, we find that this team’s final standing, of all in the Big 12, is the toughest to project.
Red Raiders Frontcourt
The Red Raiders welcome three transfers, forwards Bryson Williams (UTEP), Kevin Obanor (Oral Roberts), and Daniel Batcho (Arizona), to the front. Our Texas Tech basketball preview 2021 - 22 notes that Williams averaged 15.1 PPG for UTEP, while Obanor was good for 19 PPG and 10 RPG in the NCAA Tournament. Batcho, who comes from France, was redshirted last season with a knee injury. He could be a contributor. The starters from last season include Kevin McCullar (10.4 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.1 APG), who hit 41.6 percent of his field goals, and Marcus Santos-Silva, a 53.1 percent field-goal shooter who averaged 8.3 PPG and 6.4 RPG. Along with being a fine shooter and defender, McCullar brings toughness and a solid work ethic to the floor.
Texas Tech Basketball Preview – Backcourt
It was thought that Terrence Shannon, now a junior, might declare for the NBA. Instead, he returns for a third year with the Red Raiders. Shannon, who has All-Big 12 First-Team potential, shot 44.8/35.7/75.6 last season. He’s a forceful penetrator and elite athlete who last season averaged 12.9 PPG and 4.0 RPG. Much of the backcourt will be comprised of new players. Transfer Mylik Wilson (Louisiana), a double-digit scorer, tough defender, and fine penetrator, who started for his former school will likely do the same for Tech. Also ready to go is three-point specialist Sardaar Calhoun and versatile back and frontcourt performer Kalen Allen.
Texas Tech Basketball Preview 2021 – Final Word
A big question is can Adams keep his defensive prowess as a coach while also developing and maintaining a successful offensive scheme? Our Texas Tech basketball preview 2021 - 22 acknowledges that the Red Raiders have a lot of variables. This team has talent, experience, and depth. How and will it come together are two other issues.
