TCU Basketball Preview 2021
Our TCU basketball preview 2021 - 22 observes that last season, after going 12-4 overall and 5-11 in the Big 12, the Horned Frogs did not get a tournament invite. Under head coach Jamie Dixon (96-71 TCU/5 years, 424-194 Overall/17 years) the team finished eighth in the conference. It was Dixon’s first losing season in 18 years. The Horned Frogs’ most recent tournament appearances include a one-and-done effort in 2018’s Big Dance and 2017 and 2019 NIT appearances. In the 2017 NIT, the Horned Frogs easily beat Georgia Tech 88-65 for the championship. In 2019, TCU was eliminated in the NIT Semifinals, as Texas took the Horned Frogs out 58-44. Obviously, Dixon knows how to put together a winner, and he spent the offseason doing just that.
Horned Frogs Frontcourt
Unfortunately, the Horned Frogs lost their prized center from last season, Kevin Samuel, an avid shot blocker, scorer, and rebounder, to the transfer portal. Our TCU basketball preview 2021 - 22 finds the junior college transfer Souleymane Doumbia (Navarro College), a sophomore, will be charged with filling the void. Another transfer, sophomore forward Xavier Cork (Western Carolina), will likely start. For WCU, as a freshman, he started every game last season. Cork can score. Senior forward Chuck O’Bannon Jr. shot 40.7/36.8/75.6 last season. O’Bannon averaged 6.8 PPG and 3.8 RPG. Freshman center Eddie Lampkin could also see playing time after appearing sparingly last season.
TCU Basketball Preview – Backcourt
The Horned Frogs did score big via the transfer portal, as freshman Micah Peavy (Texas Tech), who was heavily recruited two years ago, comes to play for TCU. Peavy, an athletic, physical player, can drive to the basket and score. One experienced backcourt player, Mike Miles, returns. Last season, he averaged 13.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 3.1 APG while shooting 41.3/36.0/82.7. Sophomore transfer Damion Baugh (Memphis) is an assist-generator and tenacious player. He’s a premium distributor.
TCU Basketball Preview 2021 – Final Word
Our TCU basketball preview 2021 - 22 notes that only five players return from last season. Nine transfers, three of whom are freshmen, arrive to fill out the team. If Dixon can sort the various talents out and get everyone on the same page, the Horned Frogs will generate more wins than they did last year and earn a tournament bid. The NIT and not the NCAA seems likely.
